February 2, 1943. Friedrich Paulus descends into the basement of the Univermag department store and signs the surrender of 91,000 German soldiers. It is the end of six months that changed the war in the East forever. This episode tells that complete story — from the summer of 1942 to the frozen ruins of a city on the Volga.

We begin with Operation Blau, Hitler's plan to seize the Caucasus oilfields and sustain Germany's war economy. Stalingrad was never the primary target — but geography and a fatal decision on July 9, 1942 to split the German advance made it the decisive one. With the Sixth Army under Friedrich Paulus stretched thin and the Luftwaffe's concentrated bombing turning the city into a rubble maze, the conditions for catastrophe were already forming.

Stalin's Order 227 — 'Not one step back' — locked the Soviet defence in place and forced an improvised, ferocious urban battle unlike anything the Wehrmacht had trained for. General Vasily Chuikov's 62nd Army clung to a strip of the Volga's western bank, using hugging tactics to neutralise German air power. Sergeant Yakov Pavlov held a four-storey apartment building for two months. Sniper Vasily Zaitsev made open ground lethal for German troops. Factory floors became front lines.

And while the street fighting raged, Soviet planners were eyeing something else entirely — the exposed Romanian-held flanks north and south of the German salient. Operation Uranus was coming.

This is Episode 14 of The Battle of Stalingrad: 1942–1943.
