150 minutes of exercise every week? Seriously?

When you're living with Parkinson’s, that number can feel overwhelming, especially when getting out of a chair already feels like a workout.

But what if five minutes actually counts? What if exercising from a chair is a legitimate workout? And what if the secret isn't doing more right away, but simply finding a way to begin?

In this episode of Living with Parkinson’s: The Good, the Bad, and the Reality, I sit down with Dr. Nina Mosier, physician and co-founder of Power for Parkinson’s, for Part One of a practical two-part conversation about exercise and Parkinson’s.

We talk about:

  • Why the recommendation of 150 minutes of weekly exercise can feel impossible• Why five or ten minutes of movement is a meaningful starting point• How to find exercises that work for your symptoms, abilities, and lifestyle• Why seated exercise is real exercise and can challenge people of different fitness levels• How medication ON and OFF periods can affect when you exercise• Why gradually increasing activity matters• Inspiring examples of people in their 80s and 90s benefiting from adapted exercise• How free online Parkinson’s exercise classes can make getting started easier

One of my favorite moments is when Nina explains that walking to the mailbox still counts.

You don't need to become an Olympic athlete. You don't need an expensive gym membership. And you certainly don't need to compare yourself to someone else's Parkinson’s journey.

You need a starting point that works for you.

We also discuss the free exercise programs offered by Power for Parkinson’s, including seated workouts, cardio, strength, coordination, and cognitive challenges.

And this is only Part One!

In the next episode, Nina and I tackle apathy, motivation, bad Parkinson’s days, and how care partners can encourage movement without turning encouragement into pressure.

Because with Parkinson’s, sometimes the biggest victory isn't finishing the workout.

It's starting.

This is my personal Parkinson’s journey. What works for me may not work for everyone. Parkinson’s is different for each person, and medication plans should always be discussed with your doctor or healthcare provider.
