You know exercise is good for Parkinson’s. So why is it sometimes so incredibly hard to get started?

You have the workout ready. You know the benefits. You genuinely want to do something good for yourself.

But when the time comes, you just can't make yourself start.

Is it laziness? Lack of discipline? Or could Parkinson’s itself be interfering with your motivation?

In Part Two of my conversation with Dr. Nina Mosier, physician and co-founder of Power for Parkinson’s, we tackle one of the biggest challenges people with Parkinson’s face: knowing exercise matters but struggling to actually do it.

In this episode of Living with Parkinson’s: The Good, the Bad, and the Reality, we talk about:

  • How Parkinson’s apathy and depression can affect motivation• Why waiting until you feel motivated may keep you stuck• How small, achievable exercise goals can help you begin• Why accountability, routine, and community support matter• How care partners can encourage exercise without every reminder feeling like pressure• How long it might take to notice benefits from regular exercise• Why tracking small improvements can help you stay motivated• Three practical steps to start exercising this week

Nina shares a simple starting plan:

  1. Set a reachable goal. Try 10 minutes, three times this week.
  2. Find your best ON time. Choose a time when your medication is working well and movement feels more manageable.
  3. Start with what you can do. Seated exercise, walking, stretching, or another activity appropriate for your abilities.

And if tomorrow is your first day, Nina recommends starting with one of the free beginner-friendly workouts from Power for Parkinson’s.

Because sometimes the hardest part of Parkinson’s exercise isn't the workout.

It's convincing yourself to press play.

⚠️ Important Note

This is my personal Parkinson’s journey. What works for me may not work for everyone. Parkinson’s is different for each person, and medication plans should always be discussed with your doctor or healthcare provider.
