  • Breaking Free from Money Shame: Rebuilding Financial Confidence After Life Hits Hard.
    2026/10/20

Send us fan mail. We love to hear from you!

Money affects nearly every area of our lives, yet many of us were never taught how to build a healthy relationship with it. What happens when financial stress, unexpected setbacks, and shame leave us feeling overwhelmed or stuck?

On this episode of the Overcomers Approach Podcast, host Nichol Ellis-McGregor welcomes Barbara Quan, financial coach and accredited financial counselor, to share her journey from the 2008 mortgage crisis to financial education and coaching. Through her personal experiences with single parenthood, financial hardship, and Chapter 13 bankruptcy, Barbara offers an honest perspective on how life’s challenges can reshape our financial decisions—and how we can begin again without allowing shame to define our future.

Together, they explore how childhood experiences, family beliefs, identity, and emotional patterns influence our spending habits, debt, and financial confidence. Barbara explains why financial wellness involves more than numbers and budgets; it requires self-awareness, transparency, practical strategies, and a willingness to challenge the beliefs that keep us stuck.

The conversation also offers practical guidance for rebuilding confidence through small, consistent steps, distinguishing needs from wants, and creating sustainable financial habits. For aspiring entrepreneurs and side hustlers, Barbara shares the importance of maintaining financial reserves and separating personal and business finances to support long-term stability.

    In this episode, we discuss:

    • Barbara’s career journey from social services and mortgages to financial coaching.
    • Lessons learned from the 2008 housing crisis and navigating financial hardship.
    • Overcoming money shame and reframing bankruptcy as an opportunity to rebuild.
    • How childhood experiences and family beliefs influence financial behavior.
    • Identifying the underlying causes of financial stress and the feeling of “I can’t afford this.”
    • Understanding the connection between money, identity, emotional needs, and lifestyle choices.

  • Us Against the Pressure: Building a United Front in Marriage
    2026/10/13

Send us fan mail. We love to hear from you!

In this episode of the Overcomers Approach Podcast, host Nichol Ellis-McGregor sits down with Pesa Shayo, author and co-founder of Live Your Best Marriage, to discuss how couples can build a united front in marriage without allowing family expectations, cultural differences, or outside pressure to create division.

Together, they explore practical, faith-centered ways to navigate in-law relationships, cross-cultural conflicts, competing family loyalties, and financial expectations while protecting trust and strengthening the marital bond. From honoring parents while prioritizing the marriage to setting healthy boundaries and addressing disrespect within family settings, this conversation reminds couples that unity begins with listening to one another, having difficult conversations privately, and presenting shared decisions with confidence.

They also discuss the importance of approaching cultural differences with curiosity rather than judgment, especially when navigating traditions, parenting, and children's cultural identities. A strong marriage doesn't require partners to agree on everything; it requires them to work together toward what is best for their family.

    In this episode, we discuss:

    • Building a united front through private conversations and shared decisions.
    • Ensuring both partners feel heard without turning unity into control.
    • Honoring parents while prioritizing the new family unit.
    • Preventing financial resentment through transparency and mutual agreement.
    • Protecting your spouse from exclusion, disrespect, and hurtful jokes in family settings.
    • Navigating cross-cultural differences with curiosity, understanding, and humility.
    • Finding common ground when traditions, parenting decisions, and cultural identities collide.
    • Setting healthy boundaries with in-laws while preserving family relationships.
    • Recognizing how financial dependence or family support can complicate boundaries.

  • Understanding Personality Differences Can Save A Marriage And Strengthen A Team. Stop Assuming “Different” Means “Wrong”: Understanding Personality, Communication & Purpose.
    2026/09/28

Send us fan mail. We love to hear from you!

One tiny shift can change an entire relationship: stop assuming that “different” means “wrong.”

In this episode of Overcomers Approach, I sit down with longtime author, speaker, and entrepreneur Marita Littauer for a meaningful and practical conversation about personality, temperament, communication, relationships, and finding purpose in every season of life.

Marita’s journey began early when a book helped her parents better understand their differences, ultimately giving them tools to strengthen and protect their marriage. That experience sparked a decades-long passion for helping others understand how people are wired—and how that understanding can transform the way we communicate.

We explore what personality differences look like in real life: navigating challenging personalities in the workplace, managing the tension that can arise when opposites attract in marriage, and recognizing how unspoken expectations within families can eventually lead to frustration and resentment.

Marita also shares how she learned to recognize personality tendencies through observable clues such as energy, gestures, organization, and personal space—and how those insights can help us adjust the way we communicate with others.

But there’s an important question we tackle: When does adapting your communication become manipulation?

Marita draws a powerful distinction between trying to control someone and choosing to communicate in a way that demonstrates understanding, respect, and care.

We also shift the conversation toward purpose, identity, and reinvention, particularly for women entering a new season of life after raising children, experiencing an empty nest, or transitioning into retirement. What happens when the role you've spent years fulfilling is no longer the center of your life? How do you rediscover who you are and create a next chapter that actually fits you?

This conversation is a reminder that understanding ourselves and others can change the way we experience our relationships, our work, and even our purpose.

    In this episode, you'll discover:

    • Why “different” doesn't necessarily mean “wrong”
    • How personality differences influence communication and relationships
    • Ways to recognize personality tendencies in everyday interactions
    • How to communicate differently without manipulating others
    • Why expectations can create resentment in relationships
    • How understanding emotional needs can strengthen connections
    • Navigating identity and purpose during major life transitions
    • How women can begin creating a meaningful next chapter that reflects who they are now

If this conversation resonates with you, subscribe to the podcast, share this episode with someone who could benefit from it, and leave a review.

Sometimes, improving a relationship doesn't require changing the other person. Sometimes, it starts with learning to understand them differently.
