Alex Ovechkin’s political entanglement heats up as he appears in a Putin-backed campaign video—sparking controversy amid Russia’s parliamentary elections. The Capitals defend him, noting his Russian citizenship and offseason stays there, while stressing their focus on his on-ice performance and D.C. community impact. This isn’t new for Ovechkin—he once launched “Putin Team” and later called for peace during the Ukraine conflict. With training camp looming and a one-year NHL extension signed, fans brace for his media address—and wonder how athletes navigate global politics when they’re tied to multiple nations.
