Episode 41 of Out Wide, wrapping up the US Open 2026 chaos — here's the rundown:

The vibes: Stef is fried post-Open (watched every second from home), the Portland Thorns and Fire are both flailing, but she and her wife are teaming up for their first doubles tournament in October as "DosStephFi's." Resh is off in SF, sailing accidentally-private boats and gearing up for Valkyries fan appreciation night. Fit check happened. Billie Jean King Adidas were purchased at great personal risk (the employee store is a battlefield, apparently).

Tennis history hour: A love letter to Billie Jean King and Arthur Ashe — the legends the whole tournament is built on (literally, given the stadium names) — before diving into the actual results.

The finals: Elena Rybakina beat Sabalenka for the women's title and the #1 ranking, earning full flower-giving from the hosts ("your fits are terrible, your serve is amazing"). Alexander Zverev beat Ben Shelton for the men's — cue extensive, well-deserved dragging over his domestic violence allegations, his ball-bouncing habit (2.5 hours across the tournament, RIP everyone's patience), and his new nickname care of an ESPN mispronunciation:

Sausage Zverev. His semifinal tickets crashed from $300 to $19, which launched an extended bit about better ways to spend $19 (a Labubu, a therapy copay, an IKEA pillow "since he'll be asleep by set two").

Sabalenka villain arc: Fined $7,500 for racket abuse, told a cameraman off, rolled deep with Jake Paul in her box, and wore a Thanos Infinity Gauntlet necklace — which the hosts note is thematically perfect since she also lost.

Wins worth celebrating: Taylor Townsend's first Grand Slam doubles title (and a genuinely great tangent on her sponsor, civil rights attorney Ben Crump). Coco Gauff being extremely mature about aging out of her teen-underdog era. A whole segment on tennis players' secret nerd lives — Coco's Spider-Man/Avatar obsession, Naomi Osaka's Naruto pink hair, Monfils' Wakanda salute — that's genuinely delightful.

Institutional chaos: The WTA Finals bailed on Saudi Arabia early, landed in Indian Wells for one year, and is now $30–60M-ish deep in financial trouble heading into a Charlotte relocation. Not great!

The "Hall of Lamers": A savage little segment clocking Gabriela Sabatini (dated Trump, apparently), Jennifer Capriati (conservative troll now), and Martina Navratilova/Chris Evert's press tour, which gets zero patience from either host.

Ben Shelton discourse: An entire, very funny back-and-forth of "is he MAGA, is he a good boyfriend to Trinity Rodman, why does he have fuckboy energy" that never fully resolves — verdict: TBD, but side-eye maintained throughout.

🎾 Out Wide Ep. 40: The US Open Has Main Character Energy

Resh and Stef roll into episode 40 fresh off vacation (Resh: honeymoon #2 in Banff, Stef: an Oregon "clear water" trip that got ambushed by snow, because 2026) to recap a US Open that has fully lost its mind.

Venus and Serena reunited for one doubles match, at 46 and 44, packed Arthur Ashe, blew a 5-0 tiebreak lead, lost — and still walked off to a standing ovation, because apparently winning was never really the assignment.

Meanwhile Zheng Qinwen, a qualifier ranked outside the top 100, came back from 0-5 down not once but TWICE, including a takedown of Iga Świątek, and when asked how she pulled off the comeback, essentially shrugged and asked how she got down 0-5 in the first place.

Coco Gauff is quietly steamrolling everyone with 19 straight sets and a freshly fixed serve, Emma Navarro clapped back at her online haters by making the quarters while managing a thyroid condition, and the fashion desk is thriving — Naomi's doing full Allen Iverson tribute fits, Taylor Townsend sold out her own merch line in Bed-Stuy, and half the WTA field accidentally showed up in the same Nike dress like nobody checked the group chat.

Then it's 5 Minutes with the 5%: Alcaraz plays mixed doubles with Serena purely for the vibes, and Monfils plays his last US Open before announcing he's pivoting to wealth management — racket to spreadsheet, no notes.

Y'all, the North American hard-court swing has been an absolute rollercoaster and we are buckled in for every single twist, turn, and unhinged racket toss. Alex Eala had her full main character moment in DC — Ialla-mania is officially a documented phenomenon — taking down three top seeds (Pegula! Svitolina! Osaka!) for her first-ever WTA title and becoming the first player from the Philippines to do it. Tickets to her matches were selling out in 30 minutes. We are obsessed, and we are not sorry.

Meanwhile Iga finally snapped her title drought in Toronto looking scary-composed, and Sabalenka? Girl is spiraling. Racket tantrums, a missing dampener that conveniently bought her extra time, and a shocking early exit in Cincinnati — 2026 has gone from Sunshine Double glory to full meltdown era. We're unpacking all of it, no judgment (okay, a little judgment).

And then there's Coco, who is serving both immaculate tennis AND main character chaos — her "I'm in love with the Coco" on-court moment absolutely sent the internet into a tailspin, especially with the timing landing days after Kyrgios's cocaine suspension news broke. Iconic. Unplanned. Devastating for him, delightful for us.
