This one is a sit-down with Harpal Singh, a board-certified psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner and the founder of Mindful Sewa Psychiatry, a telepsychiatry practice that sees patients all over California.
The name means something. Sewa is the Punjabi word for selfless service, a value Harpal grew up with, and he built the practice around it.
The hardest stretch was learning to be a clinician and a business owner at the same time. His lesson: you don't need everything figured out on day one.
What he does differently is individualized care. Two patients with the same diagnosis don't automatically get the same treatment, and every option gets explained.
Care is offered in English, Punjabi, Hindi and Spanish, because in some communities mental health is still hard to talk about.
His advice for patients: ask questions, treatment isn't always about medication, and asking for help is not a weakness.
