One Single Story is a weekly podcast from Open Door Church to help the church engage with the Bible outside of Sunday morning. Currently, we are going through one book of the Bible each week and focusing on a theme in each. Why One Single Story? We believe that the Bible is one single story from beginning to end. It is the story of Jesus Christ: why we need Him, that He was coming, came, died, rose again, ascended to heaven, and today lives with us. For this, we are thankful. • Gossip, Trust, and Peace at Home - Proverbs 25:23-24 | October 19, 2026
    2026/10/19

Pastor Stephen Mizell is joined by co-hosts Tyler Bream and Wendy Korbusieski for today's One Single Story, a brief Bible study from the One Year Bible reading for October 19. This week the reading is in the book of Proverbs, and today's conversation tackles how gossip erodes trust in churches, families, and workplaces, and how chronic friction in the home can crowd out peace.

Scripture Focus: Proverbs 25:23-24 - Part of a collection of Solomon's proverbs, these two verses compare a gossiping tongue to a north wind that brings rain, then warn that it is better to live on a corner of the roof than to share a house with constant quarreling.

    In This Episode:

    * Why hidden gossip is so destructive to the unity of a church, staff, or any organization
    * How gossip works like a slow drip that corrodes trust and magnifies small frustrations
    * Why a broken baseline of trust is far harder to rebuild than it is to destroy
    * A practical definition of gossip: complaining to people who cannot solve the problem
    * How proximity and mentorship help couples and families address chronic conflict before isolation sets in
    * Why we should not normalize dysfunction by saying "that's just how we are"
    * The value of swift forgiveness and having trusted people with permission to speak into your life
    * Why a bigger house or nicer things can disguise a relational problem rather than solve it
    * How leaders can shut down gossip by redirecting it instead of entertaining it
    * A simple response that disarms venting: "Can I quote you when I go talk to them?"

Key Quote: "Peace is more valuable than space."

  • Humility, an Undivided Heart, and the God Who Is Slow to Anger - Psalm 86:1 -17 | October 16, 2026
    2026/10/16

Welcome to One Single Story! Pastor Stephen Mizell, Pastor Jay Rivenbark, and Pastor Sheryl Daughety open Psalm 86 and discuss how humility shapes our prayer life, what fractures a believer's heart, and why God's compassion, mercy, and unfailing love give us strength under pressure.

Scripture Focus: Psalm 86:1 -17 - David, a powerful king running for his life, brings his need to God in prayer. He asks for an undivided heart, remembers that God is slow to anger and full of faithful love, and trusts that all nations will one day bow before the Lord.

    In This Episode:

    • Why personal humility is essential when we approach God in prayer
    • How humility positions us to receive from God, while pride and self-righteousness act as spiritual insulators
    • What fractures a believer's heart: busy schedules, even good relationships, the pursuit of money and success, concern for reputation, and hidden or secret sin
    • The difference between a private life and a secret life
    • How meditating on God's character brings comfort when life is constantly changing
    • Why God's slowness to anger is not the same as never being angry
    • The comfort of knowing God will deal with injustice in His time

Key Quote: "Humility positions us to receive from God. Pride does just the opposite. It reverses that, so we're not able to receive anything that He'd like to pour into us."

  • Spiritual Revival - Psalm 85:1 -13 | October 15, 2026
    2026/10/15

Welcome to today's edition of One Single Story! Pastor Stephen Mizell and Pastor Jay Rivenbark are joined by Pastor Sheryl Daughety for a conversation on spiritual revival in Psalm 85. Who needs revival? What are the warning signs? And how do we rest in God's peace while walking in intentional holiness?

Scripture Focus: Psalm 85:1-13. A psalm of the sons of Korah, written after Israel's return from Babylonian exile. The psalmist recalls God's past mercy, asks Him to revive His people again, and warns them not to return to folly.

    In This Episode:

    • Psalm 85 as a model for prayer: thanking God and remembering what He has done before asking Him to act again
    • Why "returning to folly" is a deliberate choice, not an accidental misstep
    • Signs a church or believer needs revival: fatigue, apathy, self-focused motives, abandoned spiritual disciplines, tolerated sin, and indifference to lost people
    • Warning signs that are harder to measure, such as worship becoming a performance instead of a delight
    • How to balance resting in God's peace with pursuing holiness
    • Salvation and sanctification: why our choices affect the depth and joy of our relationship with God, not our standing as His child
    • How Psalm 85:10, where love and truth meet and righteousness and peace kiss, points to what Jesus accomplished on the cross

Key Quote: "You don't get disqualified from being a child of God because you return to folly."
