- His gray truck was found locked at the Shale Horn trailhead with a USGS topo map on the passenger seat and an ice axe in the truck bed.
- Search-and-rescue arrived Monday, March 10, with nine volunteers, a dog handler with two tracking dogs, and a Forest Service liaison.
- A single boot print was found less than 100 yards from the north rim on a plateau where wind and crusted ground left almost no other impressions.
