Summary

One day, a green-eyed magician traps King Kojata and agrees to release him in exchange for "something you know nothing about and which you will find on your return home". The king agrees, only realizing the true price when he arrives home and meets his newborn son. King Kojata is devastated, and decides not to tell anyone of the deal he made.

Many years pass, and his son, Prince Milan, grows up. While out hunting one day he meets the green-eyed magician and his father's agreement is revealed. The brave prince does what he must, and only with the help of Hyacinthia, the magician's youngest daughter, is he able to finally return to his father's home.

Summary

When her husband accidentally brings home an enchanted snake, a peasant woman agrees to raise him as her own son.

After some time has passed, the snake decides he is ready to marry and sends his adoptive father to the king to ask for his daughter's hand in marriage. The king agrees after the snake and peasant succeed at the three impossible tasks he set for them.

The day the snake arrives at the palace, the stalwart princess is the only one brave enough to face him. To her great joy and relief, he sheds his snakeskin and reveals that he is actually a prince. Quickly, the king and queen burn the snakeskin, transforming the prince into a dove and sending him away.

Determined to find her lost husband, the princess sets out in disguise.

When she finally rescues him they celebrate with a grand wedding feast.

Summary

After a drastic misunderstanding with her father, a princess makes her way out into the world. Using dirt as a disguise, she finds work as a shepherdess.

One day, while revisiting her former splendor, a prince notices her and is immediately smitten. After coming into possession of one of her rings, he has the kingdom searched high and low for its owner.

At their wedding the princess is reunited with her father and the misunderstanding is cleared up to the joy of all.

Summary

The little soldier manages to catch the attention of the royal family and is given an audience. He tells the King and Queen of Ludovine's promise to marry him and seemingly they agree the promise should be kept, but only if the magic money purse is given to Ludovine. Despite his misgivings, the soldier hands it over.

True to their natures, and in possession of this great treasure, the royal family avoids the soldier. Remembering he still has the mantle, he takes Ludovine to the end of the world. Cleverly, she gets the mantle away from him and leaves him stranded.

On his long journey back to the Low Country, the soldier finds some magical fruit which he ultimately uses to teach ludovine a lesson and retrieve the magical objects loaned him by the Seagull.

Summary

A soldier returning from war happens upon an old castle. Inside he finds a serpent with the face of a woman. She tells him that her name is Ludovine, her father is the king of the Low Countries, and that she has been waiting for him to rescue her. She instructs him on what to do, and once she is free, tells him to get some rest and meet her with her carriage the following day.

Varying circumstances cause the soldier to miss the meeting time over a series of days. After missing his last opportunity to join her, he follows the carriage until he reaches the sea and can go no further.

There, he tells his woes to a young fisher girl who loans him her mantle and bag of coins.

Wishing desperately to be with Ludovine, the mantle transports the soldier to the Low Countries. Realizing the power of the objects in his possession, he hatches a plan to catch the princess's attention, and begins setting it in motion….

Summary

An ailing lord sends his three sons to seek out the only thing that might cure him, the Golden Blackbird. The elder sons, assuming they will soon enough inherit their fathers riches stop at an inn where they accrue massive debts. The youngest son continues on the journey, returning to the inn and rescuing his brothers after acquiring both the Golden Blackbird and the Porcelain Maiden. Jealous of his success, the elder brothers try to kill him and take all of his possessions.

Surviving the incident, the youngest returns home in disguise, and when their father learns the truth he makes his youngest son his only heir.
