Summary

After many years spent hoping for a child, a farmer and his wife welcome a son who, to their horror, is born half-hedgehog. When the boy is old enough he leaves home with a musical pipe, and riding the family rooster.

While living in the woods he helps two different kings find their way home, on the agreement that they give him the first thing which greets them when they see their castle. Only one king is true to his word and readily welcomes Jack into his kingdom, where his life is changed forever.

Summary

The son of a poor man becomes a hero in the king's army and given great status as reward. He falls in love with the king's daughter and readily agrees to her marriage terms: to be buried together regardless of who perishes first.

When the time comes, true to his word, the young man is entombed with the princess. Inside the crypt he discovers magic snake-leaves which he uses to revive his wife. He then gives the leaves to a trusted servant for safe-keeping, just in case. This proves to have been a wise decision after his wife has a change of heart and has him thrown overboard.

Upon learning of his daughter's duplicity, the king punishes her and her accomplice with their just desserts.
