Summary

An ailing lord sends his three sons to seek out the only thing that might cure him, the Golden Blackbird. The elder sons, assuming they will soon enough inherit their fathers riches stop at an inn where they accrue massive debts. The youngest son continues on the journey, returning to the inn and rescuing his brothers after acquiring both the Golden Blackbird and the Porcelain Maiden. Jealous of his success, the elder brothers try to kill him and take all of his possessions.

Surviving the incident, the youngest returns home in disguise, and when their father learns the truth he makes his youngest son his only heir.

Summary

While traveling the world, a young man discovers a magic snuff-box which can provide its wielder whatsoever he might want. The young man uses it to build a magnificent palace that attracts the attention of the neighbouring king. Impressed by the young man's power and riches, and desiring peace, the king gives over his daughter in marriage. The queen, however, is jealous of all the splendor and steals the snuff-box and palace. Leaving his wife behind, the young man journeys out to find and restore what is theirs.

Summary

After his father kicks him out due to his brother's betrayal, Rosamund meets a fairy who gifts him an enchanted ring. This ring has the powers to make its wearer invisible, and to take on the appearance of the prince. Careful not to misuse the power, Rosamund uses the ring to set right his familial relationships and ingratiate himself with the king. Understanding the responsibility of carrying the ring, he chooses to return it to the fairy. The fairy then gives it to his wicked brother, who uses its power to do awful things, which ultimately get him executed.

In the fairy's words:

"The same things are often a healing medicine to one person and a deadly poison to another."

Summary

Young Manikin is cursed due to the foolishness of his parents. The fairy Genesta takes him away to raise him and give him the best advantages she can.

Time passes, and after hearing about the Princess Sabella and seeing her portrait, he decides to join the ranks of prince's and knights questing to the top of the Ice Mountain to win her hand.

Along the way he has many adventures including: gathering a crew of sailors from a previously enchanted ship; befriending the king of an island where the entire population has been transformed into spaniels; and even receiving a piece of enchanted gold from a monkey.

Eventually he reaches her land and begins to learn her history and that of her parents.

Knowing he has an outside chance of success the traditional heroic route, he sets a plan in motion to win the favor of the royal family, and after proving himself in the king's army, he is made a trusted adviser.

By the time Prince Manikin successfully journeys to the Ice Mountain and retrieves Princess Sabella's heart, he is so well beloved by the kingdom that their marriage is celebrated by all.

Summary

The Three Little Pigs (Brownie, Whitey, and Blacky in this version) each choose a house for their mother to build them. Brownie chooses one of mud, Whitey one of cabbages, and Blacky on of bricks. When the sly fox their mother warned them about decides to visit their new homes only one is able to stand against him.

Summary

Princess Potentilla, the beautiful daughter of King Cloverleaf and Queen Frivola, is locked away by her mother for fear that someone might fight her more beautiful than the queen. To ensure no one would go looking for the princess they spread rumors that she is a terrifying and hideous monster.

Attracted to the kingdom by one of the queen's parties, Prince Narcissus, a ward of the fairy Melinette, hears the stories and determines to see the beastly princess for himself. Armed with an invisibility ring he goes in search of her, and is shocked to discover the truth. Immediately he falls for the beautiful princess.

Unfortunately, the evil enchanter Grumedan also wishes to marry the princess. And so, they two begin to compete for her hand.

Ultimately, after much foul play, duplicity, and some fairy intervention, Prince Narcissus and Princess Potentilla marry. They live happily and are beloved by all of their subjects.

Before allowing Princess Sylvia to choose her fairy gift, the flower fairy sends her to visit with princesses she had gifted in the past. After each visit Sylvia reflects and reports on the gifts- beauty, eloquence, pleasing, wit- and concludes that the best gift she can ask for is a gentle spirit.
