Today’s Sermon is On the Cross and the Thief by St. John Chrysostom. Chrysostom served as the Archbishop of Constantinople, capital of the Byzantine empire, 397-404. He died in 407 in exile for confronting the corruption of the empress. He is widely known as one of the the greatest preachers in church history, hence the nickname Chrysostom, which means “golden-mouth”. It was preached on Good Friday during Holy Week in 386 or 387 during Chrysostom’s early ministry as a priest in Antioch. It was translated by Robert G. T. Edwards and published by St. Vladimir’s Seminary Press in the book, Sermons on the Life of Christ.
