Before gas engineer Ollie Gilcreest became known for the Heating Geek YouTube channel, he was secretly swapping his sixth-form suit for garage overalls. His mum eventually noticed that his “school run” was getting suspiciously relaxed.

In Season 1, Episode 1 of Off The Job: A Tradesman Podcast, Ollie joins Keiran Yates and Pete Withers to talk about his route into the UK gas trade, the pressure of tackling 20-plus boiler breakdowns in a day, and a Christmas Eve pump failure with around 16 guests expected. Lovely timing, that.

Ollie also explains how videos made for fellow engineers in a WhatsApp group became the Heating Geek channel. Along the way, the three get into fault-finding, difficult customers, running a gas engineering business and why Ollie would rather be on the tools than managing an inbox.

New to Off The Job? We’re a UK trades podcast for honest stories from gas engineers, plumbers, electricians and the people who work alongside them. Expect trade humour, strong language and the occasional job you’d rather forget.
