  • Hey Arnold 28th Halloween Show with Arun Mehta and Craig Bartlett
    2026/10/01

Step into the shadows of Hillwood for a special Halloween edition of Hey Arnold! Anniversary Show! Arun Mehta is joined once again by Hey Arnold! creator Craig Bartlett for an in-depth look at the spooky, supernatural and psychologically unsettling side of the beloved animated series—from ghost stories and urban legends to claustrophobic thrillers, dreamlike nightmares and cinematic horror homages.

Craig discusses his own taste for psychological and classic horror, including the influence of filmmakers such as Stanley Kubrick, Werner Herzog and Alfred Hitchcock, before unpacking how those inspirations found their way into Hillwood. The conversation begins with “Arnold’s Halloween”, tracing its debt to Orson Welles’s famous War of the Worlds broadcast, the influence of the Peanuts Halloween special, the alien designs, Big Bob’s conspiracy-fuelled panic and Maurice LaMarche’s remarkable ability to perform two characters against himself in real time.

The discussion then travels through some of the series’ most memorable eerie adventures. Craig revisits the handmade season-one atmosphere of “Haunted Train” and the recording of its unforgettable song; the underground claustrophobia and character comedy of “Das Subway”; the buried-treasure mystery, Elk Island setting and deliberately ambiguous ghost of “Wheezin’ Ed”; and the expressionistic, Hitchcock-inspired imagery of “Pigeon Man”, where Arnold’s empathy cuts through the fear surrounding an urban legend.

Other stops include the dangerous and deeply unsettling “Sewer King”; the storm-soaked “Four-Eyed Jack”, steeped in The Twilight Zone and The Outer Limits; the photographic mystery and sinister clown misdirection of “Freeze Frame”; and “Magic Show”, conceived as a nightmarish reversal of It’s a Wonderful Life in which Helga believes everyone is better off without her. Later stories include the psychological pressure cooker of “Curly Snaps”, the voodoo-inspired “Sid’s Revenge”, the genre-savvy “Sid the Vampire Slayer”, the unusually dark “Ghost Bride”, and the dreamlike fear at the heart of “Big Bob’s Crisis”.

Along the way, Craig shares production memories from the writers’ room, recording booth and storyboard department. He celebrates the work of collaborators including Tuck Tucker, Joe Purdy, Steve Viksten, Clint Bond, Derek Drymon, Kelly James, Brian Mark, Lang Elliott and Jamie Mitchell, as well as performers Maurice LaMarche, Jamil Walker Smith, Mark Hamill, David Lander, Clancy Brown, Adam Wylie and Michael Welch. He also recalls the ambitious hand-crafted animation of the early seasons, the expressive staging and saturated palettes that made the scary stories land, and the creative freedom that allowed the team to push surprisingly dark ideas while still delivering comedy and heart.

The episode also touches on Francesca Smith’s recovery and the support she received from fans, Craig’s reaction to Arnold’s Paramount+ Super Bowl appearance with Patrick Stewart, a fan question about Wolfgang’s shirt, and the meaning behind “Jamie O.” The conversation closes with a tribute to the talented, ambitious and sometimes argumentative crew whose collaboration gave Hey Arnold! its remarkable visual richness and tonal range.

  • Old Spook Lane Creepy Chats: The Munsters Today
    2026/10/17

It's that time of year where we look back on everything spooky on Old Spook Lane Creepy Chats. Arun and Patricia are looking back on two reboots on two classic 1960's sitcoms: The Munsters and The Addams Family and find out which iteration captured the spirit of their original counterparts. The first one they look back on is the 1988 syndicated sitcom The Munsters Today, a sequel/reboot of the 1964 sitcom The Munsters.

Taking place in 1966, Grandpa Munster invents sleep chambers that'll grant people hours of sleep in a matter of minutes. However, an earthquake hits the switch to "Forever". 22 years later in 1988, they are awakened by two contractors who wish to demolish the house believing the house was long abandoned. They have to raise $50,000 to pay the bills and taxes for the house otherwise they'll be left homeless. The show focuses on them living their everyday lives struggling with adapting to the radical 80s. Oh wait, they adapted quickly. Never mind.

When the show premiered, critics and fans called it a pale imitation of the original series despite it lasting longer than the original series. After it ended its run in 1991, it immediately faded into obscurity. What did Arun and Patricia think of the series?
