The Roof Man: McDonald’s Rooftop Heists, a Daring Prison Escape, and Living Inside Toys "R" Us | Ol' Dirty Basement PodcastIn this Ol' Dirty Basement Podcast episode, the hosts discuss Jeffrey Allen Manchester, aka the “Roof Man,” whose Army 82nd Airborne training and McDonald’s management experience helped him commit a string of late-1990s rooftop break-ins and morning armed robberies at McDonald’s across multiple states, often locking employees in walk-in freezers and calling police to free them. After being caught in North Carolina in 2000 and sentenced to 45 years, he executed a bold 2004 escape by hiding under a delivery truck. Instead of fleeing far, he secretly lived for months inside a Charlotte Toys "R" Us and later created a hidden room in an abandoned Circuit City next door, built surveillance with baby monitors, and planned a post-Christmas Toys "R" Us robbery. He was identified, attempted to destroy dental records, and was arrested in January 2005, receiving a 40-year sentence with release expected in 2036, after later escape attempts in 2009 and 2017.00:00 Podcast Cold Open00:21 Holiday Rain Talk00:34 Mandalorian and He Man01:09 Meet the Roof Man01:46 Urban Dictionary Detour02:37 Manchester Origins05:18 Army to Civilian Struggles09:21 McDonalds Roof Robberies11:06 How He Pulled It Off17:25 Marker18:01 Caught and Sentenced22:16 Prison Escape Masterplan26:52 Toys R Us Hideout30:09 Mall Memories and Cameras36:15 Church Alias and New Life38:08 Hiding in Plain Sight39:27 Holiday Heist Setup41:01 Circuit City Nostalgia43:32 Living Under the Stairs46:03 Day After Christmas Robbery46:51 Lair Discovered and Arrest52:07 Breaking Down the Mistakes57:54 Sentencing and Parole Math59:35 McDonalds Breakfast Tangent01:06:17 Shrinkage and Inventory Gaps01:09:04 Wrap Up and Next Pick

  • V.C.R Presents: Cape Fear (1991)
    2026/06/15

Cape Fear (1991) Review | Scorsese, De Niro & a Disturbing Thriller (Vintage Cinema Review)Dave, Matt, and Zap welcome viewers to the Vintage Cinema Review and discuss Matt’s pick, Martin Scorsese’s R-rated thriller Cape Fear (1991), noting it’s a remake of a 1962 original with cameos, a 128-minute runtime, and strong box office against a $35M budget. They cover the cast led by Robert De Niro, Nick Nolte, Jessica Lange, and Juliette Lewis, then recap the plot: ex-con Max Cady stalks attorney Sam Bowden over withheld evidence, escalates with violence against Laurie Davis, manipulates Bowden’s teenage daughter, and pushes the family to a climactic houseboat showdown on the Cape Fear River. They debate ethics, performances, disturbing scenes, and some effects, share fun facts (Spielberg/Scorsese project swap, green screen use, De Niro’s physical transformation and dental work), and give their “late fee/return/burn” verdicts.00:00 Welcome to Vintage Cinema00:26 Why Cape Fear00:52 Remakes and Originals02:03 Theater Memories and Dune02:49 Back to Cape Fear Facts04:03 Budget Box Office Talk05:14 Cast Roll Call07:25 VHS Synopsis Read10:21 Plot Setup and First Encounters12:31 De Niro Transformation13:43 Smoking and Theater Etiquette18:52 Stalking Backstory and Dog20:30 Lawyers Ethics Debate27:15 Assault and Manipulation Escalate33:11 Danny Scene Breakdown36:08 Emancipation Confusion36:51 Creepy Theater Moment38:29 Max Turns the Tables39:47 Courtroom Tape Debate41:16 Good Old Boy Justice43:25 Slasher Villain Energy44:04 Under the Jeep Twist46:46 Riverboat Final Showdown48:33 Style Choices and Visions50:27 Boat Effects Breakdown52:09 Fun Facts Roundtable01:03:06 Ratings Late Fee Return Burn01:10:34 Wrap Up and Plugs

    2026/05/18

The Alex Mengel Case: Cop Killing, Scalping, and a Shocking Run to Canada | Ol' Dirty Basement PodcastIn this Ol' Dirty Basement Podcast episode, the hosts discuss the life and crimes of Alex Mengel (also pronounced “Mangle/Mangol”), a Guyana-born immigrant who settled in the Bronx and later spiraled after losing his job and separating from his wife. After a 1985 hunting trip to the Catskills, Mengel was pulled over for speeding, murdered Officer Gary Steinmelosky, and fled, later attempting to abduct a 13-year-old girl while disguised in women’s clothing. He escaped to Toronto, where he was captured driving the car of missing computer programmer Beverly Capone; police found the murdered officer’s gun, the murder weapon, and Capone’s scalp, with her stabbed body later found near Mengel’s cabin. Investigators also recovered a map circling the Harrisburg area with marked locations potentially tied to unsolved murders.
