  • Océan Vert - Ep7 - Releaf - Turning fallen leaves into paper
    2025/09/30

Meet Alexander Sobolenko, co-founder of Releaf Paper.

The discussion explores his entrepreneurial journey, from a corporate career at Lenovo to building startups in different industries, and ultimately launching Releaf, a company that produces paper from fallen leaves.

Alexander explains how the idea emerged, the technical innovation behind transforming leaves into pulp, and the dual environmental benefits: reducing deforestation and valorizing green waste that would otherwise be incinerated or composted. Releaf’s process achieves significant CO₂ savings compared to both virgin and recycled paper.

The conversation covers the challenges of seasonality, building a supply chain with municipalities, and positioning the product in a market where costs remain higher than conventional paper. Releaf has already worked with major partners such as Uber Eats, BNP Paribas, LVMH, and L’Oréal on pilot projects, proving that large brands are ready to pay a premium for sustainable packaging and communication materials.

Alexander also recounts the relocation of the company from Ukraine to France in 2022, driven by the war and supported by Business France and the local innovation ecosystem. Today, Releaf operates a factory in Île-de-France and continues to refine its technology while scaling its impact.

This episode highlights the story of a startup tackling two global challenges—waste management and deforestation—while navigating the realities of innovation, cost, and customer expectations.
