Episode 16: The Cost of Looking Away
Years ago, while rushing to meet an important deadline in San Diego, I passed a homeless man who asked me for help. I said no and kept walking.
Later, I went back to look for him—but he was gone.
That moment has stayed with me ever since.
In this episode of Our Freedom’s Edge, I examine what happens when urgency, fear and convenience override our humanity. This is not a story about one man on one street. It is about the moments when we convince ourselves that someone else’s suffering is not our responsibility.
Human dignity cannot depend on whether someone is known to us. Tyranny survives when people stay silent, but cruelty also survives when ordinary people look away.
The question is not whether we have ever failed. Most of us have.
The question is what we do after we recognize it.
