The Sermon on the Mount is Jesus’ manifesto for life in the Kingdom of God. The series will begin with the good news that, in Jesus, God’s Kingdom is available to ordinary people here and now, before exploring the radically upside-down life that flows from living under his reign. We’ll resist reading the Sermon merely as a list of impossible ideals or moral rules, and instead we’ll hear it as Jesus’ invitation to become the kind of people who naturally live this way. At its heart is the call to apprenticeship: learning from Jesus how to live the life of the Kingdom, as heaven breaks into earth through a people who follow His way. The controlling question throughout the series is: How is Jesus teaching us to become the kind of people who naturally live this way?
