概要
2 Corinthians Outline ⁃ Salutation (1:1-11) - Sets the stage for the rest of the letter that for a believer in Jesus in this world there will be difficulties and pain and God uses those to strengthen us and give us the opportunity to bring His comfort to others as we testify to God's work in our own lives. ⁃ Itinerary Change (1:12-7:16) Paul addresses his change of plans. Pastor explains the difference between the definition of "hope" in the Bible and the 21st century definition of "hope." Today, hope means it's something we wish comes true, it might or it might not. Whereas "hope" in the Bible is assured it is something that is certain. Hope is anchored in God. Paul in chapter 3:12ff, says that because they have this kind of hope they are bold. Pastor shares the two-fold explanation of the "veil" and Paul's reason for talking of the "veil." Pastor also shares the rules and regulations put in by the elders of that day and how similar they are to today's churches with all the rules. When we come to know Jesus the "veil" is removed and we see Him as our personal Savior. He changes us from the inside out. This growth continues throughout our lives through the power of the Holy Spirit. As a result we want to share that with others, yet it is not us who converts others to faith, it is God as He uses us to bear witness to Him. Paul goes on to say we live by faith, not by sight. He shares that through faith we are new creations in Christ. God has erased our past guilt through our faith in Christ and His desire is to heal us from the past so that more and more we can experience living in Him. The past has not disappeared, rather God is in the business of destroying its impact in our lives. Then Paul goes on to encourage us stay faithful to Christ by choosing friends that know Him, not living with one foot with Him and the other in the perverse culture of the world. For our spiritual wellbeing we can't live in both. Paul encourages us to live as our new creation, to choose the way of God and daily repentance. ⁃ Jerusalem Collection (8:1 - 9:15) Paul makes it clear that our generosity, caring for others and giving to the Lord are because God first gave something to us - Jesus. We are blessed by God to be a blessing to others. Christian giving, mercy, grace and goodness are something that flow from a changed heart. ⁃ Apostolic Authority (10:1 - 13:14) In these closing chapters Paul defends his calling and his ministry. He talks about his desire that everything is taken captive by Christ. He doesn't boast, but boasts in the Lord. He defends that he speaks truth in Christ and speaks of what he's endured, which matches what Jesus says His followers will endure. These last chapters are filled with many instances of great trial and tribulation for the Gospel. We see a man who has suffered for the Lord Jesus Christ. In Paul we see the truth of Jesus' words, "Blessed are you when they revile and persecute you, and say all kinds of evil against you falsely for My sake. Rejoice and be exceedingly glad, for great is your reward in heaven, for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you." Matthew 5:11-13. Paul says these are what a servant of Christ looks like. Paul talks about the "third heaven" in chapter 12. Pastor explains that through the Jewish view of the day: ⁃ The first heaven is where the birds fly ⁃ The second heaven is where the stars and moon and sun ⁃ The third heaven is where God dwells In the final chapters of this book Paul tells that the Lord has been active in his life, that the Lord called him for the purpose of leading people to a knowledge of the Savior. He goes on to say the reason he came to them was so that they might know Jesus as their Savior, Deliverer and Redeemer so that they might know the Living God and the joy of walking in the Spirit. And then he says he won't boast in his visions, but will boast in his weakness, a thorn in the flesh that kept him humble before God. It's where he learned that God's grace is sufficient because Christ's power is made perfect in our weaknesses. Paul continues by saying that he will gladly boast and delight in weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions and difficulties, for when he is weak, then he is made strong in Christ's power that rests on him. This has the sense of the Shekinah Glory of God resting - dwelling - like with the children of Israel in the tabernacle. Paul is saying the when he is weak the shekinah glory of God comes down on him because God is the only one who can see us through hard times. Join us next week for the rest of our study of Galatians.
