このコンテンツについて

The Mahabharata is this epic Indian work that encapsulates a great deal of Indian Mythology. It is a magnificent story that is constantly being rewritten and retold since its inception that was somewhere between 3000 BC and 1500 BCE

‘Not Your Mother’s Mahabharata with SP Jayaraj’ is a podcast where S.P. Jayaraj tell the story conversationally to his wife Azure Anderson and to friends, most of whom have never heard of the tale. Listeners familiar and unfamiliar with the epic are treated to their entertainingly honest first reactions.
Doing it conversationally as opposed to it being a straight up reading allows there to be variations in the story and the chance to pick apart some of the ideas about life that the Mahabharat brings to the forefront.

This podcast’s goal is to make this great work accessible, and entertaining to an adult audience. Come in expecting some laughs, some pop culture tangents, and some adult language.
This is a labor of devotion to the Mahabharat quite unlike any other you might come across.

We dive right in with fellow myth lover, storyteller, and entertainer, Matt Kessan, also known as Reverend Matt from Reverend Matt's Monster Science.

First, Shiva finds new love that is also old love, which excites the gods who are desperate for Shiva to have his destiny fulfilling son. They are a little too anxious as it leads to an adventurous 'birth' involving a godly pigeon and a boiling river. I'd say you can't make this stuff up but here we are.

Then, it's the story of the Tripura, the three flying demon fortresses, that actually is pretty noble before the gods get their way and they need to destroy the cities through a team up in a very literal sense.

Matt is more familiar with the Ramayana than the Mahabharata, and is thrilled to hear the connections between them whilst sharing his own questions and monster expertise.

We meet Aaron King, RPG Game designer and Co host of the Podcast RTFM (Read The F****** Manual), and tell him some of the origin stories that the immortal sixteen year old sage Markandaya tells the Pandavas.

We revisit the origin of Vishnu, Brahma and Shiva, and go down the bloodline of Brahma's child Daksha who has grown to despise Shiva and is against his daughter marrying Shiva- even though she is his cosmic other. Things go from bad to worse in this godly soap opera that spans a goddess's 2 lifetimes, that also leads to the birth of of Kartikeyya the warrior god destined to vanquish a tryranical demon while still a child

We also introduce the Hindu God of Love Kashyapa- and we all have opinions on his superiority to Cupid.

  • NYMM 42: "I've got it! We should be ruled by a mortal!" Said the guru of the gods...

The Pandavas are reunited and have decided it's time to face reality, leave the Himalayan sanctuary, and show their enemies the Kauravas that they are still around. However, there are still some adventures to be had and stories to hear before they finish their decent.

We are excited to have Duck Washington with us on this adventure as we say good bye to the Rishi Lomasa, and hello to a GIANT F***ING SNAKE!!!

What's the story behind the snake that is mightier than the demon crushing Bheema? Well we get into that too as we tell the story of Nahusha, the mortal king whom the gods call upon to rule them when their controversial regular king Indra decides to do some penance for some bad decision making.

Then Yudhishthira saves the day by doing what he does best.

Talking - talking, talking, talking while his brother is wrapped in coils of snake.
