On June 30, 1559, King Henry II of France entered a ceremonial joust in Paris and insisted on one more pass against Gabriel de Lorges, Count of Montgomery. Montgomery’s lance shattered against the king’s helmet. Fragments passed through Henry’s visor and struck his head near the eye. He survived for ten days, then died in agony.

Four years earlier, Michel de Nostredame—known to history as Nostradamus—had published a quatrain describing a young lion overcoming an older one in single combat, with eyes pierced inside a golden cage. The verse is authentic. It existed before Henry’s accident. And its resemblance to the king’s death became the foundation of Nostradamus’s reputation as a man who saw centuries ahead.
