Halloween night, 1998.

My wife and I lived in a small apartment building outside Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, where most residents knew each other.

Every Halloween, our neighbors organized something called the floor walk.

Several apartments opened their doors for an evening of desserts, games, conversations, and old Halloween movies.

Everyone moved together from one apartment to the next.

People joined.

Others left.

And nobody paid much attention to how many guests were in the group.

That year, six of us planned to stay together for the entire evening.

But somewhere during the first gathering, someone else joined us.

A man wearing a long dark coat.

Black gloves.

And a smooth white mask with no expression.

He didn't introduce himself.

He barely interacted with anyone.

And because it was Halloween, nobody thought much of it.

He followed us upstairs.

Entered our friends' apartment.

Then came into my own home with the rest of the group.

At one point, I noticed him standing near the hallway leading toward our bedrooms.

I assumed he was looking for the bathroom.

But as the evening continued, something began to bother me.

The man never removed his mask.

He never joined our conversations.

And he always seemed to position himself near a doorway.

Then one of my friends quietly asked me a question.

Who's that?

I looked at the masked man.

I thought he was with you.

My friend shook his head.

He thought the man was somebody else's guest.

We asked the others.

Nobody recognized him.

Nobody knew his name.

And nobody remembered inviting him.

Yet he had already spent most of the evening walking through our apartments.

A few minutes later, the man disappeared.

We assumed he had simply gone home.

Until someone noticed something unusual inside one of the apartments.

Then another neighbor discovered something equally strange.

And suddenly, the evening no longer felt like an ordinary Halloween gathering.

As we began putting the pieces together, we realized the man in the white mask might have known far more about our building than any visitor should.

But the most unsettling part wasn't that a stranger had joined us.

It was how easily every one of us had welcomed him inside.
