American writer, director, and producer **Nick Davis** joins *Our City Tonight* for an extended conversation about his documentary *You Had to Be There*, which explores the remarkable 1972 Toronto production of *Godspell* and the creative community that emerged from it. Co-written with his wife and frequent collaborator, **Jane Mendelsohn**, the documentary revisits an extraordinary moment in Canadian entertainment history. The production brought together performers whose careers and creative relationships would become closely connected with *Second City*, *SCTV*, *Saturday Night Live,* and a remarkable generation of North American comedy. Davis explains how reading **Martin Short's memoir** inspired him to look more closely at the Toronto production and recognize that its significance extended far beyond an unlikely gathering of future stars. In this extended interview, Nick discusses the origins of *You Had to Be There*, the creative community surrounding *Godspell*, and the lasting influence of that remarkable period in comedy history. **Watch the shorter video version of this conversation on the Our City Tonight YouTube channel.** *The Our City Tonight Podcast* features extended conversations about film, television, theater, music, arts, entertainment, and culture, with the people behind the stories.
