A law professor at the University of Auckland is standing firm after facing backlash from an Act MP who accused her of spreading disinformation in a lecture about the Treaty of Waitangi and a controversial bill. The professor’s remark — that the bill sought to “get Māori to go back inside their box” — sparked debate, with the university defending her under academic freedom, which protects critical, even contentious, discourse. The MP insists scholarly integrity must prevail, urging clarification, while students rally behind her, praising her for fostering independent thought. The bill in question, rejected last year, remains a flashpoint in New Zealand’s ongoing Treaty debates.

Armageddon Expo is banning smart glasses that can secretly record video at its Auckland convention, citing serious privacy concerns as the tech makes it too easy to film people without their knowledge — especially women — and share footage online. Despite exemptions for vision assistance being impossible to verify, organizers are shutting down all recording-capable glasses to protect attendees’ trust and ensure a safe, respectful environment for everyone.
