The New York Islanders are embracing a fresh start under new head coach Peter DeBoer, who brings 17 NHL seasons and two Stanley Cup Finals to the table. With just a few games last season, DeBoer now has full training camp to build his identity, demand accountability, and align the roster around his vision. Players like captain Bo Horvat — whom DeBoer coached on an Olympic team — and returning Kyle Palmieri are eager to learn and adapt. After a late-season collapse that cost them playoff hopes, the team is hungry to prove doubters wrong and reset for success from day one.

The New York Islanders’ training camp is heating up with big roster questions and uncertain lineups, making the season’s outcome a wild card. While Ilya Sorokin, Matthew Schaefer, Bo Horvat, and Mathew Barzal lead the MVP race with their proven talent, don’t sleep on dark horse contenders like Kyle Palmieri or young guns Simon Holmstrom and Victor Eklund—if they stay healthy and break out, they could steal the spotlight and signal a bright future for the team.

Bo Horvat takes the captain’s reins for the New York Islanders in 2026-27, becoming the 16th leader in franchise history after four seasons as Canucks captain. Anders Lee steps down after holding the role since 2019, while head coach Peter DeBoer expands leadership to include Ryan Pulock and Kyle Palmieri as alternates — with Barzal, Pelech, and especially Matthew Schaefer (a standout character and leader) playing vital roles. The season opener in Toronto against the Maple Leafs — led by former Islander John Tavares — adds drama, as it pits two recent first-overall picks: Schaefer vs. McKenna. A loaded start to a new era.
