A patient is in cardiac arrest. CPR is underway. Electrodes record brain activity. Cerebral oxygen is measured. Headphones and hidden computer images are placed into the resuscitation environment for one reason: to test whether a person who later reports leaving the body can perceive information that ordinary senses could not reach.

For decades, survivors of cardiac arrest have described strikingly similar memories: separation from the body, altered time, peace, light, encounters, life reviews, and the sense of approaching a boundary. Most survivors remember nothing. But a minority return with experiences they describe as vivid, organized, and deeply consequential.

This episode follows the physicians, neurologists, and consciousness researchers who tried to move the subject beyond stories. Bruce Greyson created a scale to measure the experience. Pim van Lommel’s Dutch hospital study found near-death reports in a measurable minority of resuscitated patients. Sam Parnia’s AWARE studies attempted to test awareness during actual cardiac arrests. Meanwhile, neuroscience found that body-separation sensations can be induced by brain stimulation, NDE-like states can occur with ketamine and DMT, and dying or resuscitated brains may show brief organized electrical activity.

The mystery is not whether people report these experiences. They do. The question is when the memories form—and whether the changing brain can explain everything survivors say happened when their hearts stopped.
