  • Rewilding Plymouth: the story of Poole City Farm
    2023/03/14

Plymouth City Council owns and manages a unique rewilding project at the heart of Plymouth; Poole Farm and Derriford Community Park. The park consists of 147 hectares of beautiful wooded valleys, wildflower meadows, rivers and green spaces. It is sandwiched between the neighbourhoods of Leigham, Estover, Derriford, Crownhill and Eggbuckland.

Poole Farm is comprised of a huge diversity of projects that seek to bring environmental and social justice to the heart of the local community. We will hear from some of the voices at the farm and learn about how nature and people are bouncing back. From tree planting to community action and health and well-being, Poole Farm leads the example in demonstrating how cities are vital in putting local communities at the centre of environmental stewardship.

Thanks to Green Minds, which is funded by the European Union, Urban Innovative Action funded Project, a beaver re-introduction strategy has taken place and is likely to continue in the future. This is the first urban beaver re-introduction project in the UK.

Check out Poole Farm on their website and social media to see how you get involved today. If you have a project or voice that needs amplifying, get in touch @ thenaturedeficitpodcast on Instagram.

  • Nature Deficit Poetry Edition: Eight Year Recap.
    2023/02/17

Poetry; I've been doing it for yonks. It's been the most consistent outlet I've had over the last 8-9 years. In this episode, I recap my work and share my story. If you, or someone know, would benefit from using poetry/spoken word as a tool for self-expression, this episode could be helpful.

Delving into poetry can be an antidote to the modern pace of life; it can also be fiery and full of rage, but most importantly, it's totally yours. Nobody can tell you how to do poetry. It's you. Your words, your voice.
Poetry enables you to see the intricacies of someone else's thought process... In a non-linear fashion. Thank god, what a relief! Are there many spaces in our society where we get to learn that there is more we have in common than divides us?

Poetry helps us listen to others and speak the words that are important to us.

  • Nature Deficit Poetry Edition: Certain
    2022/12/14

This week I'm sharing a collection of poetry I wrote during the first locked down in 2020.

It traces a circuit I made near my home in Bristol. It was during that time when we were only allowed out for one hour a day. It's nearly three years on now, but that period is still so fresh in my mind.

This collection isn't necessarily even about the pandemic, but lockdown did offer an opportunity to explore the bits of life that were ordinarily so close but were, somehow, just out of reach.

It's about finding solace in the green spaces and getting to know a tiny patch of earth.

The mound in Bristol was saved because local people protested and campaigned to save it from developers in 1997. It reminds me to engage with my local spaces, they aren't fixed entities.

Thanks to @i_suck_moss for the artwork for this piece. ❤️

  • Wandering Elixirs: fungi, mushrooms, building networks and human health.
    2022/12/04

Rosy Cheeks from Wondering Elixirs, live on air at Soundart Radio.

Rosy is a fountain of knowledge, experience and wisdom in all things fungal and mushroom related. I found this conversation incredibly nourishing as well as exciting. We Spoke about fungi in relation to human health, the wood wide web, the mushroom renaissance, the fear of mushrooms and Rosy's personal journey and fascination with the fungal world.

Rosy brought in some gifts for me of the fungal variety, which I will share pictures of on Instagram- so be sure to head to thenaturedeficitpodcast on there and give it 'follow'. Likewise, if you're looking for some Christmas presents or just some winter immunity for your health this year, check Wondering Elixirs on Etsy or Instagram.

I feel this conversation will be the first of many. Strap yourselves in!
