The Vezina Trophy is always a wild race, with surprises lurking around every corner. This season, keep an eye on Colorado’s Blackwood or Wedgewood if one locks down the starter role on a playoff-bound Avalanche squad. In St. Louis, Joel Hofer could explode into contention if he gets more ice time and the Blues turn things around. And don’t sleep on Lukas Dostal in Anaheim — a bounce-back year and team improvement could make him a dark horse contender. The usual suspects are there, but these goalies are primed for an unexpected Vezina run.

The Boston Bruins just handed Fraser Minten a seven-year, $7.2M average annual deal—set to start in 2027-28—that’s more than just a gamble; it’s a strategic investment in his potential. At just 22 and with only 107 NHL games under his belt, Minten’s upside is huge. His breakout season—17 goals, 35 points in 82 games—gave the Bruins confidence, and without a no-trade clause, they retain flexibility. With few high-end center prospects on the roster, this move locks in a key piece for their long-term rebuild. While some fans may balk at the cost, this contract could turn out to be a steal if Minten continues to develop.

Tyler Seguin’s ACL recovery is proving to be his toughest NHL battle yet, with setbacks and a slower-than-usual nine-month timeline forcing him to focus on daily progress. After surgery last December and a June pause due to a relapse, he’s now back on the ice, channeling resilience from past injuries and connecting with fellow rehabbers. GM Jim Nill praised Seguin’s evolved game—faceoffs, scoring, leadership—and expressed optimism as the Stars await his return, eager to see the versatile star evolve into a cornerstone of their future.

Matthew Schaefer, the No. 1 pick in the 2025 NHL Draft, is already rewriting rookie records as a defenseman for the New York Islanders — tied with Hall of Famer Brian Leetch for most goals by a rookie blueliner, won the Calder Trophy unanimously, and landed in the elite 2A tier, putting him among the top 30 players in the league. With Peter DeBoer now running the full season, Schaefer’s breakout year is just the beginning — and he’s being compared to legends like Cale Makar.

Alex DeBrincat is locked in on Detroit, refusing to let team upheaval shake his commitment—he led the Red Wings in goals and points last season, and despite Dylan Larkin’s trade request, Patrick Kane’s return to Chicago, and Steve Yzerman’s exit, he’s determined to stay. In a candid moment, DeBrincat praised his teammates’ growing chemistry and called the current chaos a chance for realignment, urging the team to reflect, rebuild, and prove doubters wrong as they aim to end their 10-year playoff drought.

Aleksander Barkov is back, healthier than ever, and leading the Florida Panthers into a new season with fire in his belly. After knee surgery last fall, he dominated the World Championship, scoring 11 points in 10 games to help Finland win gold — and he knew right away he was good to go. Now, as captain and Selke Trophy winner, he’s anchoring a roster that’s returning most of its Cup-winning core, minus goalie Sergei Bobrovsky (now in Toronto), who’s been replaced by Jacob Markstrom — a move Barkov loves. And with Brady Tkachuk joining the fold, eager to learn from and play alongside Barkov — whom he calls one of the top three players in the world — the Panthers feel like they’ve reloaded for another deep playoff run. Recovery’s over. Game on.
