  • Three Dreams, Three Legends : The Pedlar, The Kist, and Donald Din
    2025/09/21

Welcome to Myth, Mystery, Lore and History – the podcast where ancient legends and timeless tales come to life. New episodes will be out every week, so be sure to subscribe now and uncover the legends behind the lore.

In this episode, I’m searching out one of the most enduring folk tales in British storytelling: The Pedlar of Swaffham — a story with roots reaching all the way back to 9th-century Mesopotamia. This is a tale that’s crossed continents, evolved through centuries, and continues to spark the imagination.

I’ll be exploring three powerful versions of this ancient narrative, each with its own local flavour and cultural twist:

    • The Pedlar of Swaffham from Norfolk
    • The Kist of Upsall Castle from Yorkshire
    • And Donald Din and the Castle in the Kail Yard from Scotland

Each story begins the same way — with three dreamers, each dreaming three times of hidden treasure… and setting out on a journey to discover the truth behind their visions.

After examining their similarities and differences, I’ll also share some Scottish folklore around rhyming riddles and buried treasure — part of the oral tradition that keeps these stories alive.

  • The Witches of Eagle’s Crag — Folklore and Legends of Todmorden Vale
    2025/09/19
In this debut episode of Myth, Mystery, Lore and History, I delve into the dark and fascinating folklore surrounding Eagle’s Crag (also known locally as Bill Knipe)—a striking rock formation looming over Todmorden Vale in West Yorkshire, near the border with Lancashire. Uncover two eerie tales steeped in British witchcraft lore: The Loynd Wife and Lady Sybil of Bernshaw Tower. Both stories are deeply rooted in the landscape around Todmorden and Cliviger, weaving together myth, memory, and historical fragments from a time when superstition ruled the hills. After exploring the origins and historical context of these local legends, the episode closes with a chilling encounter with Shrieker, or Splash—a spectral black hound said to haunt Cliviger Gorge. We also take a look at some curious folk remedies and superstitions once practiced in Todmorden Vale during the 1920s. If you’re fascinated by Northern English folklore, mythical creatures, witch stories, and local legends of Yorkshire and Lancashire, this episode is the perfect place to start your journey. 🎧 Subscribe for new episodes every week as together we will explore the forgotten tales and strange histories that shaped Britain’s mystical landscape.
