There are some losses you do not recover from because recovery suggests you can somehow return to the person you were before they happened.
On August 7, 2022, one day before my birthday, my 24-year-old son, Kyle Nathaniel Terry, died by suicide. There was a Keith before that day and a Keith after that day. They are not the same man.
For a long time, I thought grief meant finding my way back. Eventually, I realized there was no going back.
In this deeply personal episode of The NEXT BIG THING, I ask a different question:
What can grief build in us after it destroys something we can never replace?
Nearly four years after losing Kyle, I share what grief has taught me about time, leadership, ambition, faith, strength and what actually deserves a piece of our lives.
I also challenge something we often tell grieving people: that eventually they need to “move on.”
I did not move on from my son.
I moved forward carrying him.
If you are grieving someone, I will not tell you to find the lesson, turn your pain into purpose or get over it. Instead, I will leave you with the question I am still answering:
What would it mean for you to move forward while carrying the love with you?
