  • The Naked Island - Decades 1
    2025/06/13

    Hello, Jamie here.

This is the first in a three part series called 'Decades'. The idea is simple. Returning guests Sheridan Seraphin and Billy Stanton join me to highlight one film from a specific decade (luckily, Sheridan picked the 1960s, I choice the 70s and Billy choice the 80s)In this episode Sheridan takes the lead talking about the film 'The Naked Island' directed by Kaneto Shindo. It's great and I'm very grateful to Sheridan for bringing him to the podcast.

Sheridan's short film 'Finished Sympathy' will be participating at the Walthamstow International Film Festival, and it's a pretty much perfect short.

Billy's festival, NOLI https://filmfreeway.com/NoliTheTooLongTooDifficultTooRawShortFilmFestival is on Freeway right now. https://nolishortfilmfestival.wordpress.com/ It's great!

My strange short film 'Intimate Communications'(a film for all of us who have ever needed to scream) will be screened at the Kino Short Film Open Mic Night on the 17th of June. https://www.kinoshortfilm.com/short-film-openmicIt's at the Strongroom Bar near Liverpool Street Station. Doors at 7pm. It's a great evening with a number of short films (so if you don't like mine that's fine!)

Hope to see you there. More info here- https://fb.me/e/8489eh6wwTickets here -https://dice.fm/partner/dice/event/v3adad-short-film-open-mic-17th-jun-strongroom-bar-london-tickets?

  • 'no desire to win...' Shadows in Paradise; Aki Kaurismäki (Winter Sun 3)
    2025/02/28

This is the second episode in our occasional series on the films of Aki Kaurismäki.

Today we are discussing 'Shadows in Paradise' from 1986.

Masterful performances, direction and a fine example of making a film the right length.Additional audio attribution -

  • Longing for a home you have never known. L'Atalante (1934) with Billy Stanton
    2024/12/12
In this episode I talk to Billy Stanton. Billy is a writer, filmmaker and the organiser of the Noli film festival. He introduced me to both L’Atalante and Jean Vigo and is a passionate advocate for a free and creative cinema. Links: https://steelcathedrals.wordpress.com/- This is Billy’s blog with links to his short fiction and some of his film writing. https://nolishortfilmfestival.wordpress.com/- this is the festival website. https://filmfreeway.com/NoliTheTooLongTooDifficultTooRawShortFilmFestival- this is the Film Freeway page. https://shop.bfi.org.uk/l-atalante-bfi-film-classics.html?srsltid=AfmBOopHBa-0kvtyJG8doL3BNcU8K7zw8OlwRmcvzM4keHjfVecrdHCb- this is the Marina Warner book on L'Atalante that Billy mentioned a few times https://books.google.co.uk/books/about/Jean_Vigo.html?id=6LDHQgAACAAJ&redir_esc=y - this is Paulo Gomes' beautiful biography of Jean Vigo https://www.sensesofcinema.com/2004/feature-articles/kapo_daney/ - this is a reprint of the Serge Daney's piece on Kapo (and Jacques Rivette) that Billy mentioned when we were talking about After Hours. Probably my favourite piece of film criticism ever! https://sergedaney.blogspot.com/ - there's been two amazing translations of Serge Daney's books in the last couple of years by Semiotext(e), but until then, this site and a translation of Postcards From the Cinema were the only ways to read Serge in English.
