  • 'I might get a beret.' Hana Bi (1997) Kitano Takeshi
    2026/03/06

This episode is about Takeshi Kitano's finest work (in my opinion) Hana Bi, or Fireworks, from 1997.

A moment when a truly fascinating artist gets it pretty much just right.

  • Ein Mann Wie E.V.A. (1984) ‘Nothing about him seems natural.’
    2026/02/20

On this episode I follow a thread from Penman's Fassbinder Thousands of Mirrors to 'Ein Mann Wie E.V.A.

Directed by Radu Gabrea and depicting a troubled film production under the dubious command of E.V.A, a Fassbinder like figure.

  • ‘Our love must be sacrificed for the shipyard…’ Hamlet goes business- Winter Sun ep. 6
    2026/02/13

From 1987, Hamlet goes business might be a criminally under appreciated classic in the oeuvre of the psychobilly Finn.

  • 'I don't believe in writer's block but I do believe in depression' - three films with Karlo from Movie Food.
    2025/11/14

I was very lucky to get to interview Carlo Pangalangan Labrador from the 'Movie Food' podcast. We spoke about three films: 'The Last of the Mohicans', 'The Commitments' and Akira Kurasawa's 'Dreams' and a lot more besides.

We have been trying to organise this chat for a while and it didn't disappoint.

  • At the NOLI film festival 2025
    2025/10/20

It was my pleasure to attend the NOLI Festival on October the 12th 2025 at the Et Cetera Theatre in Camden, London.

Here are some reflections from Billy Stanton (friend of the podcast and one of the organisers), a few short interviews from the night and a quick afterword from me.

NOLI is providing a home for films that might be too intense, too strange, too home-made, too long, too short... for other festivals.

It was a wonderful night with kindred spirits and an excellent programme.

If you care about film as a living art form festivals like NOLI are a must have and, in that spirit, I would be extra grateful if you could share this episode far and wide.

If you get the chance to attend next time, it would be great to see you there.
