Welcome to Episode #1 of the Part Time Card Collector Podcast! 🎙️
I’m Mo, the Part Time Card Collector, and this week I’m talking about two things that have been on my mind in the hobby.
First, my first eBay Live show. I ran 38 $1-start card auctions in just under 90 minutes and finished with nearly $76 in sales. I’ll talk about what went right, what didn’t, whether I think eBay gave my first show a boost, and the big question going into my next one: do I stick with $1 starts or move up to $2 or $3?
Then we get into card grading.
With Collectors now owning PSA, SGC and Beckett/BGS, what does that mean for collectors? SGC has moved to $50 grading, while PSA's new Standard tier is $59.99. Are collectors slowly being conditioned to accept much higher grading prices?
I also discuss why I haven't personally submitted a card for grading in around 18 months, why I still buy and sell slabs, the flood of graded cards entering the hobby, and why I'm wondering whether another correction could eventually be coming despite the enormous grading numbers we're seeing right now.
Finally, how much should we consider sponsorships and business relationships with grading companies when listening to hobby commentary? It doesn't necessarily make someone's opinion wrong, but knowing where everyone is coming from matters.
💬 Let me know in the comments:
Have you sold on eBay Live or Whatnot? Would you start cards at $1, $2 or $3? And are today's grading prices getting too high?
