If your learners are exhausted before they even reach the content, the problem might not be motivation. It might be the mode. Jackie welcomes Dr. Dwayne Wood back for part two of the mini-series to unpack multimodal learning for adult learners and what it really means to design with intention instead of stacking more media on top of a course.

We dig into cognitive load theory and why the same concept can become easier or harder depending on how you present it. Dwayne shares concrete examples of “tool friction” in online learning and blended learning, where unfamiliar tech quietly steals attention from the objective. From there, we connect multimodal learning to Universal Design for Learning (UDL): giving learners smart options like transcripts alongside video, accurate captions, and accessible resources that work with screen readers. We also talk about common AI-related pitfalls, like infographics that look great but fail basic accessibility due to contrast, image-only text, or missing alternatives.

You will hear practical instructional design strategies you can apply without overwhelming yourself or your learners: pairing explanation with application, using dual coding effectively, and building discussion forums with a real purpose so they foster social learning rather than checkbox posts. We also name the mistakes to avoid, including trend-driven modalities, too many clicks, and assessments that inadvertently measure technical confidence rather than mastery.
