Between November 1966 and December 1967, residents around Point Pleasant, West Virginia, reported encounters with a large winged figure, often described with red or reflective-looking eyes. The best-known early report came from Roger and Linda Scarberry and Steve and Mary Mallette, who were driving near the former wartime TNT area outside town.
Their encounter reached the Point Pleasant Register the following day. Additional reports followed, while journalist John A. Keel and writer Gray Barker later connected the creature accounts with UFOs, strange visitors, unusual messages, and possible warnings.
Then, on December 15, 1967, the Silver Bridge collapsed into the Ohio River, killing forty-six people. Federal investigators identified a physical engineering origin for the disaster: failure in a critical eyebar within the bridge’s suspension chain.
