    Righteousness is given entirely by Jesus; He takes our sin and gives us His righteousness, so our identity and eternal life are secure apart from our performance. Because righteousness always produces life and sin always produces death, practicing the way of Jesus leads to real flourishing while practicing sin leads to withering and destruction. Practicing righteousness, even with many failures, both protects us and others from the effects of sin and participates in God’s undoing of death and darkness in the world.

John points us back to Cain, whose jealousy and hatred toward his brother eventually led to murder, revealing what happens when hatred is allowed to take root in the heart. Our love for one another is evidence that God has brought us out of death and into life. May we be people who refuse the way of Cain and instead embody the self-giving love of Jesus toward one another.

    Our righteousness is not something we achieve; it is the gift of Jesus, secured by His work and received through faith. Because we belong to Him, we are invited to practice the righteousness He has already given us. This is more than keeping rules. True righteousness is rightness expressed through love—the kind of love we see perfectly in Jesus, who gave Himself completely for us. As we fix our eyes on Jesus, we learn to make our lives available for the flourishing of others. Love moves beyond words into deeds, generosity, humility, and obedience. We do not lay ourselves down to earn God’s favor, but because in Christ we are already secure and deeply loved. When we fail, we practice again, trusting the Spirit to form Christ in us. As we give ourselves to one another in love, righteousness produces life, and our shared life becomes a testimony to the wisdom and beauty of God.

    Renaut shared about his journey into the Amazon rainforest, where he had the opportunity to bring the gospel to unreached villages. In a place where so much was unfamiliar, he was reminded of something beautifully simple: the gospel is still the power of God to save. We do not change hearts through the strength of our arguments, our intellect, our skill, or even our ability to understand another culture. Jesus saves. And while the villages of the Amazon may feel like another world, the people Renaut encountered were not so different from us. Across cultures and continents, the deepest needs of the human heart remain the same. The people in our neighborhoods, workplaces, schools, and everyday lives need the good news of Jesus just as desperately.
