Where do you want to be when the world feels heavy? Home. It's a physical and emotional refuge - a place of stability that so many of us take for granted.
In this episode, host Jennifer Clark talks with Gage Yager, CEO and Executive Director of Trinity Habitat for Humanity in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. Over the past 30 years, Trinity Habitat has helped more than 800 families become homeowners and ranks in the top 10 of more than 1,200 Habitat for Humanity affiliates nationwide.
Gage shares his unlikely path from commercial real estate broker to nonprofit leader, and unpacks Trinity Habitat's "hand up, not a handout" philosophy: a partnership model where families help build their own homes, complete financial literacy training, and take on mortgages they're equipped to manage. The result? A foreclosure rate of just 2.5% since 1989, and a track record of families who go on to earn college degrees, build careers, and reinvest in their communities.
Along the way, Gage tells the deeply human stories behind the mission. Like a mother who fled domestic violence and rebuilt her life after living in her car, and a man who survived political upheaval and imprisonment abroad and found a fresh start in a Habitat home. These stories are a powerful reminder that stability isn't just about a house. It's about giving people the foundation to write their next chapter.
In this episode, you'll hear about:
- How Trinity Habitat's "hand up, not a handout" model works
- The ripple effects of homeownership on families, schools, and neighborhoods
- Real stories of resilience from Trinity Habitat homeowners
- How financial literacy training sets families up for long-term success
- Ways to get involved with your local Habitat for Humanity affiliate
