Without Evan’s body, the DA agrees to release Merrick Malone. Meeting at his house, he and Katherine reveal his generous last wishes, and Hale agrees to complete a few final tasks for Merrick.

Merrick has his preliminary hearing, where the jury decides there is enough evidence to go to trial. Hale and Charlotte follow the clues under Merrick’s house and discover exactly where X marks the spot.

Charlotte talks herself into a job at the Dawsonville Diner, and Hale has a cryptic conversation with Merrick in jail about what lies hidden beneath the house.

Merrick is arrested for the killing of Evan Lacroix, Hale and Charlotte show up to school in style, and later they find Merrick’s basement and some old documents that might indicate Merrick is sitting on a lot more than his land.

While the Dawsonville Diner celebrates its grand opening, Urie Feldman agrees to help Charlotte find one of her ancestors. Merrick reveals his liver is failing, and he asks Hale to look after his property.

Social Services comes to take Charlotte, but they meet their match with Macy Woodard.
