The Three Billy Goats Gruff, a family of brothers, are hungry because they've eaten all the grass in their field. To reach a new field with delicious grass, they must cross a bridge guarded by a nasty troll. The smallest Billy Goat Gruff goes first. When the troll threatens to eat him, the clever goat convinces the troll to wait for his bigger, tastier, middle brother. The troll agrees and lets the smallest goat pass. The middle Billy Goat Gruff then crosses. He uses the same trick, telling the troll to wait for their biggest brother, who would make an even larger meal. The greedy troll, eager for a bigger "goat pie", lets the middle goat pass. Finally, the biggest Billy Goat Gruff, "as big as a fridge," stomps onto the bridge. When the troll emerges, the biggest goat tricks him into looking away and then knocks him into the river, where he's washed away. With the troll gone, the three brothers safely cross the bridge and happily feast on the abundant grass in the new field, living happily ever after, free to cross whenever they please.
