  • Navigating the Complexities of Brain Injury with Dr. Daniel Avesar
    2025/09/30

In this episode, Cynthia Aguiar interviews Dr. Daniel Avasar, a brain injury survivor and neurophysiology expert. They discuss Daniel's personal journey with brain injury, the misunderstandings surrounding it, and the challenges faced by survivors, especially parents. The conversation emphasizes the importance of asking for help, understanding emotional responses, and the role of movement and exercise in recovery. They also explore the interconnection between trauma and brain injury, highlighting the need for a holistic approach to healing.

    More about Dr. Daniel Avesar

My name is Daniel Avesar, PhD. I am a brain injury survivor and advocate dedicated to raising awareness and promoting understanding of brain injury. When I was 18 years old (10/11/1999), during the third week of my undergraduate studies, I sustained a severe traumatic brain injury (TBI) that required a craniotomy of the right side of my skull. This marked the beginning of a seven-year journey to rebuild my cognition, regain my inner self, and address vision challenges. These experiences led me to study neuroscience, seeking to understand the profound changes I had undergone after my TBI. I earned my PhD in neurophysiology from Dartmouth College in 2013 and completed postdoctoral research at the University of Oregon in 2017. Since then I have been interviewing brain injury survivors as well as researchers and clinicians to create free online content aimed at dispelling misconceptions and increasing public understanding about brain injury.

    Brain injury content online:
I have two projects online, a podcast and a talk series that together promote better understanding of the invisible nature of brain injury. My podcast Experiencing My Brain is devoted to detailed discussion with brain injured people about their internal problems and ways they navigate life with a brain injury. The Building Brain Awareness (BBA) To Help Support Brain Injury Recovery talk series includes clinicians, support groups, and researchers presenting on the brain and brain injury topics. My work has helped me learn how to better communicate and advocate for brain injured people.

  • How ChatGPT can help.
    2025/05/17

In this episode of Moms with Concussions, I dive into a powerful and accessible tool that can make a huge difference during recovery: ChatGPT. Whether you're navigating brain fog, fatigue, forgetfulness, or the overwhelm of daily "mom admin" tasks, this episode will show you how AI can help lighten the load. From simplifying grocery lists and meal plans to drafting emails, managing schedules & more - ChatGPT can be a gentle, helpful companion during the healing process.

I also share some of my favourite ways to use it as a mom in recovery, how it’s helped me stay organized, and how you can use it to advocate for yourself when your brain needs extra care.

If you’re a mom healing from a concussion and juggling a million things—this episode is for you.

  • Episode 10: Restoring Balance: Naturopathy in Concussion Care
    2025/01/20

In this episode, I have the honour of speaking with Dr. K.

Dr. K had an early introduction to Naturopathic Medicine by her Mom, and found that the treatments and time spent with the Naturopathic Doctor created a safe, open and healing experience unlike any other.

She studied Kinesiology Pre-Health with Co-op option at the University of Waterloo. She went on to study Naturopathic Medicine at the Canadian College of Naturopathic Medicine (CCNM) and graduated in 2015.

The CCNM Sports Medicine shift gave her the additional experience she needed to start her practice in Naturopathic Sports Medicine. Naturopathic Sports Medicine is used to help active individuals of any age and fitness level to prevent or manage injuries, create meal plans and ensure adequate hydration for their activities.

When she isn’t at work, she spends her time with family and friends, working out, playing soccer and guitar.
