You hold your phone a little further away. You switch between readers and contacts all day. You tell yourself it's fine, until one day it isn't.

In this video, I'm going to explain why reading vision changes so suddenly after 45 and walk through the real options for fixing it for good.

    ❓ QUESTIONS ANSWERED
Why can't I read my phone anymore after 45?
After 45, the eye's natural lens loses flexibility and can no longer focus easily up close. This change builds slowly, which is why it can suddenly feel like your vision dropped off overnight.
Does wearing reading glasses make my eyes worse?
No. Wearing readers does not speed up the natural aging of the lens, and avoiding them does not protect your vision. The lens keeps changing whether you wear glasses or not.
What are the alternatives to reading glasses?
Options include LASIK with monovision, which sets one eye for distance and one for near, and refractive lens exchange, which replaces the natural lens with an implant. The right choice depends on your eyes and what you want to see clearly.

  • Not Eligible for LASIK? 4 Alternatives That Can Fix Your Vision (And My #1 Pick)
    2026/10/23

Told you can't have LASIK? That is not the end of the road. Maybe your cornea is too thin, your prescription is too high, or your eyes are too dry, but those reasons do not have to keep you in glasses forever. There are four other procedures that can correct your vision, and one of them is actually my top pick, even for patients who qualify for LASIK.

In this video, I'm going to break down why LASIK gets ruled out and walk through the four alternatives I recommend, including the one I prefer over LASIK itself.

    ⏱️ TIMESTAMPS
0:00 Not Eligible for LASIK? 4 Alternatives That Can Fix Your Vision (And My #1 Pick)
0:24 The 5 reasons LASIK gets ruled out
1:48 PRK as a laser alternative
3:00 EVO ICL for high prescriptions
4:30 When reading vision needs addressing too
5:35 Choosing your lens design and tradeoffs
7:06 SMILE, my number 1 pick explained
8:19 Who actually qualifies for SMILE
9:10 Picking the right procedure for your eyes

    ❓ QUESTIONS ANSWERED
What are the alternatives if I don't qualify for LASIK?
The main alternatives are PRK, EVO ICL, refractive lens exchange, and SMILE. Each one suits a different combination of corneal thickness, prescription strength, and overall eye health, so the right choice depends on your specific exam results.
    Is SMILE better than LASIK?
For many patients who qualify for both procedures, SMILE causes fewer dry eye symptoms because it uses a smaller incision and does not create a full corneal flap. That makes it my preferred option even over LASIK for the right candidate.
Can I get vision correction with a thin cornea?
Yes. Depending on your prescription and overall eye health, options like EVO ICL or refractive lens exchange correct your vision without removing any corneal tissue, which makes them strong choices when LASIK and even PRK are ruled out.
