In January 1981, on a property in north-western Queensland, Mark’s father was cleaning out a dry dam with his 25-tonne Caterpillar D7E bulldozer when teeth sheared off the cog driving its tracks. The machine could only turn in circles. It was Friday afternoon, the Sabbath was approaching, the sky was threatening rain, and the service company warned him to get the dozer out of the dam at once. A much lighter grader couldn’t budge it. After several failed attempts and repeated prayers, the dozer suddenly gained traction, climbed the dam wall and came to rest above the waterline. Two days later, the dam was full.
