Minutes with Dad is way for me to connect with my kids, grandkids (when we are all older), brother, sister, wife, friends and make up for some lost time and some shortcomings from being a dad with no experience to becoming a dad with some age and a little perspective. I’ll be talking about life, thoughts I might have, things I see, trying always to improve and keeping up with it happening.

Part of the reason I want to do this is because I don't get to talk to all of you all the time, sometimes rarely. And I think maybe this is a good way to have a talk and not be in your face. So that's another reason.”

The Six Inches Between Your Ears

    Minutes with Dad

How much of what we think is impossible is actually impossible—and how much of it is simply something we've convinced ourselves we can't do?

In this episode of Minutes with Dad, I share the remarkable true story of George Dantzig, a graduate student who arrived late to class, mistook two famous unsolved math problems for homework, and solved them—partly because no one had told him they were supposed to be impossible.

We also look at Roger Bannister's four-minute mile, the modern idea of taking on a Misogi—an intentionally difficult personal challenge—and why doing something hard can give you something more valuable than the accomplishment itself:

Evidence about who you are and what you're capable of.

Sometimes the distance between where you are and where you want to be isn't measured in miles, years, money, education, or experience.

Sometimes it's only about six inches—the distance between your ears.

Bobbie handed me the phone and AJ my granddaughter was distraught and asked me "Pop Pop, what did you do with the giant log", I didn't know what she meant and then it hit me..... I moved the giant log / tree that had been in the front yard her entire life, we climbed on it, she climbed on it, it was part of her world. The background is that we were moving loads of dirt and we had rented some equipment that I could move the giant log. Garrett and I had talked about it but we didn't consider the kids, AJ and Cal had always known the giant log in the front yard and it was part of their playground, their world. I failed to consider everyone that was affected by change, even though change is inevitable, always communicate to everyone that is affected.
