Darius Taylor’s injury woes are creating a golden opportunity for A.J. Turner, the top-ranked transfer running back who’s been sidelined since last season. With Taylor limited to just 14 snaps and another freshman out for the year, Turner gets his shot against Akron — a perfect chance to prove he’s ready to carry the load and revive Minnesota’s struggling run game.

Minnesota got absolutely shredded by Mississippi State in a 38-13 blowout, but the real story? Both teams had the longest scoring and non-scoring drives of the week — Minnesota’s offense marched for a field goal on a 16-play, 10-minute drive, while MSU’s 16-play, 10-minute drive ended with a blocked field goal. The deeper issue? The Gophers’ offense has been starved for explosive plays since 2021, tied for second-fewest 30+ yard plays in college football. Their scoring has cratered from over 34 points per game in 2019 to just 20-26 points lately — a trend that’s finally caught up to them. Even with a talented QB, without big plays, they’re struggling to compete. If things don’t change fast, they’ll miss out on unlocking their quarterback’s full potential as the game evolves.
