Ep 83a | Grand Master Ray Wizard,

Part 1:

The Black Karate Federation Grand Master Ray Wizard, newly appointed President of the Black Karate Federation (BKF), joins The Mind Sensei Podcast for the first of three parts.

We go back to the roots: the BKF's formation in 1969 to support Black karate schools that faced unfair treatment at tournaments, the meaning behind the BKF crest

We also look at Ken Wing Tai Ba, Steve Muhammad's blend of Kenpo, Wing Chun, Tai Chi and boxing, and the BKF katas "Strike of the Serpent" and "TT2" (dedicated to Ted Taylor).

Part 2: The California Blitz & UFC 2. Part 3: Impose Your Will: A Life in Personal Protection.

Datu Tim Hartman Part 3 | Teaching, Kenpo Connections & Martial Arts Legacy

A martial artist’s influence continues through the people they teach.

In the final part of this three-part series, Mr. Peter Tas welcomes listeners back to The Mind Sensei Podcast’s conversation with Datu Tim Hartman.

The closing focus is teaching and continuity: the responsibility of passing on an art, supporting future instructors and maintaining an honest connection to its history.

Datu Hartman’s background brings together leadership in Filipino martial arts and connections with the wider martial arts community, including practitioners of American Kenpo.

Guest background and teaching interests:

• President of the World Modern Arnis Alliance.

• Founder of Horizon Martial Arts.

• International seminar instructor and host of FMA Talk.

• Advocates studying Modern Arnis as a complete martial art.

• Emphasises sustained mentorship and accurate acknowledgement of teachers.

• Has credited Lee Wedlake, Bob White and Ed Parker Jr. with helpful guidance on teaching language and leadership.

His Kenpo connections are relationships and influences, separate from his documented Filipino martial arts lineage.

For instructors, students and martial arts historians, this final instalment offers a useful starting point for reflecting on what we pass on through our own practice.

Datu Tim Hartman Part 2 | Remy Presas, Kombatan & Balintawak Lineage

Understanding a martial artist’s lineage means looking closely at the teachers, training relationships and responsibilities behind it.

In Part 2 of our three-part series, Mr. Peter Tas continues with Datu Tim Hartman, whose background connects Modern Arnis, Kombatan and the Bacon-Buot branch of Balintawak.

This episode’s focus is the influence of teachers and the importance of preserving an accurate account of how martial knowledge passes between people.

Lineage and rank background:

• Modern Arnis: direct instruction under Professor Remy A. Presas

.• Kombatan: direct instruction under Grandmaster Ernesto A. Presas.

• Balintawak: instruction under Ted Buot in the lineage of Anciong Bacon.

• Professor Remy Presas awarded him sixth degree, Lakan Anim, and the Datu title in 2000.

• Later WMAA board promotions are separate from his Presas-awarded Modern Arnis rank.

• Published biographies record ninth degree and the Grandmaster title in Kombatan under Ernesto Presas in 2007.

For practitioners and instructors, these distinctions help make lineage useful, specific and understandable.
