  • Nebraska aerial firefighters step in as wildfires threaten ground crew in rough terrain
    2026/03/16
With more than 700,000 acres ablaze across Nebraska - an area larger than the state of Rhode Island - firefighters are battling some of the largest wildfires the state has ever seen. Firefighters on the ground battle the Cottonwood Fire, extending about 40 miles from Farnam to Brady as the crow flies, they received critical support from the air, including pilots from several Nebraska aerial application services. Brian Wilcox of Wilcox Flying Service in Neligh and assistant fire chief with the Tilden Fire Department, spent two days flying water drops over the fast-moving fire. He and three other pilots, including Casey and Tim Williams of Arrow Aviation in Broken Bow and Flynn Baker of Buffalo Air Services in Kearney, were deployed Friday and Saturday, flying roughly from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. each day.

  • No end in sight: 9 of every 10 acres in Nebraska now drought-stricken
    2026/03/16
Nebraska’s weather will swing dramatically this week, but the bigger story for agriculture remains a persistent lack of moisture that continues to deepen drought conditions across much of the state. Dr. Eric Hunt, Assistant Extension Educator of Agricultural Meteorology and Climate Resilience, says recent systems have brought little relief, and there's no end in sight in the near term. “We really just don’t have good chances the next couple of weeks,” Hunt said. “Most places around the state did not get more than a tenth of an inch of moisture out of this last system.”

  • Amid a nightmare situation, producers urged to document livestock losses | Ag News You Need to Know
    2026/03/16
Ag officials are urging producers – in the midst of a nightmare – to track their losses. The USDA Farm Service Agency says livestock producers who lost animals, grazing, or feed may qualify for disaster assistance. The Livestock Indemnity Program, or LIP, provides payments for livestock deaths beyond normal mortality caused by adverse weather. Another program, ELAP, offers emergency assistance for feed or water shortages and other wildfire-related losses. Producers are encouraged to document everything — including livestock death losses, photos or video, rendering receipts, feed purchases, water hauling costs, and records showing livestock had to be removed from grazing. Losses must be reported to local USDA Farm Service Agency offices by March 1st of 2027 for 2026 disaster claims.
