概要
In this episode, we tell how a routine May voyage turned into a drifting emergency after a storm anchor swivel failed from crevice corrosion, and how one small, orange-capped bottle found in the Altamaha marsh changed everything by revealing the log’s last lines and raising the question that shore could not yet answer.
Person: Donald Reed
Person: Patrick Reed
Date: May 8 (storm night), May 9 (sixty nautical miles southeast), May 15 (final log entry), May 18, 2011 (bottle found)
Location: Altamaha Wildlife Management Area, mud at edge of the marsh
Vessel: Calvary Bell, 28-foot sloop
- The bottle was a one-liter Nalgene with an orange cap, wedged in the mud at the marsh edge.
- The laminated navigation card inside bore forty-one pencil log entries, with cramped handwriting and the final entry dated May 15.
- The Calvary Bell was a twenty-eight-foot sloop with standing rigging replaced eighteen months before the voyage.
- The parachute-style storm anchor was deployed on two hundred feet of rode; the swivel was a three-eighths-inch stainless swivel rated at 2,200 pounds breaking load.
- The swivel parted by crevice corrosion around 8:00 a.m. on May 8, sending two hundred feet of rode and the anchor into the sea and leaving the boat drifting into the Gulf Stream.
