Private security firm Desert Protection Security in Phoenix is under fire after multiple incidents where armed guards allegedly pointed guns at teens at parties — including one where a guard shot a rifle at a teen on the road. Investigators uncovered body cam footage, social media posts, and even weapons in a guard’s car. Two members, Thomas Nickels and Alexander Alcatar, have been arrested on charges including aggravated assault and participating in a criminal syndicate — all while the company operated without a license. Police are still seeking more info.

Phoenix and the Southwest are bracing for another brutal heatwave, with highs hitting 105-109 in Phoenix and near 110 in parts of Arizona and southern California. Overnight lows barely dip into the 80s, and dangerous humidity is making conditions feel like Miami — dew points soaring into the mid-70s. While 110-degree days aren’t new this summer, the combo of heat and humidity is especially risky now, since September usually brings cooling. Rain chances remain slim in the Valley, though scattered showers may hit higher elevations in eastern and southeastern Arizona. A possible shift by Friday evening could bring thunderstorms to the lower desert as high pressure eases.

Scottsdale Unified is facing a major school overhaul as it weighs closing, merging, or relocating multiple campuses amid a six-thousand-student drop since 2010—driven by falling birth rates and rising use of scholarship accounts. Plans include shuttering Copper Ridge K-8 and Laguna Prep, impacting nearly 900 students, while schools like Anasazi, Cheyenne Traditional, Redfield, and Desert Canyon are also in the mix. Parents and the community are outraged, calling the process rushed and demanding a deeper review before final decisions. A public hearing is set for September 22nd, with more discussions to come—this could reshape education access for thousands.

Arizona’s health officials are moving fast to protect residents as flu and COVID-19 season looms—pharmacists can now administer vaccines without waiting for federal approval, thanks to new standing orders. With respiratory illnesses expected to surge in early October and federal guidance delayed until late October, this proactive step ensures easier access for those who want to get vaccinated. The goal? Reduce hospital strain this winter—not by forcing shots, but by making them readily available. Keep in mind: not all pharmacies carry the vaccines, and coverage varies by insurer.
