Memphis is poised for a major turnaround in the 2026-27 season, according to Blue Ribbon Yearbook, who predict the Tigers will dominate the American Athletic Conference after a rough 13-19 campaign last year. Coach Penny Hardaway has revamped the staff with familiar faces like Tony Madlock and new hires Trevor DeLoach, Sean Mock, and Steve Wright—all bringing valuable conference experience. The roster is almost entirely rebuilt through the transfer portal, featuring nine newcomers including standout Tylik Weeks, projected as Newcomer of the Year and All-Conference First Team. Three local freshmen and international recruit Nemanja Popovic (eligibility pending) add depth, while returning players William Whorton and Julius Thedford could step into bigger roles. Blue Ribbon also ranks Wichita State and North Texas as top contenders, praising Memphis’s elite backcourt and strong frontcourt. The season opens Nov. 2 against Iowa State in South Dakota—setting the stage for a breakout year.
