In February 1997, a man identifying himself as Mel Waters told a national late-night radio audience that a strange opening near Manastash Ridge outside Ellensburg, Washington, had swallowed years of refuse without filling.

Waters said he lowered approximately 80,000 feet of weighted fishing line into the opening without finding a bottom.
