Matthew chapters 19 through 23 contain Jesus Christ’s clear teaching, given as He went on toward Jerusalem, on the way of salvation and the life of a disciple, the grace of the kingdom of God and the fruit of faith, and the difference between true faith and false religion. Jesus corrected the wrong thoughts and the wrong faith of men, and He Himself walked the way of the true Savior, who gives His own life for many. He also entered Jerusalem as King, exposed the unbelief of the hypocritical religious leaders, and declared the judgment that would come upon those who refuse the righteousness of God.

In the first part of Matthew Chapter 19 three scenes that look different from one another follow in order. First the Pharisees test Jesus over the matter of divorce. Next comes the word concerning living without marrying, and then people bring little children to Jesus. However, these scenes are directed toward one center. It is that a person must not try to change the will of God to fit his own circumstances and greed, and that he must lay down his own judgment like a little child and receive the word of the Lord.

Today’s word is a word that I often preached in the past. I have preached many sermons on this theme, “What good thing shall I do that I may have eternal life?” (Matthew 19:16). A certain young man came to Jesus and asked in this way. Then “So He said to him, ‘Why do you call Me good? No one is good but One, that is, God. But if you want to enter into life, keep the commandments’” (Matthew 19:17).

A young man came to Jesus and asked what good thing he must do in order to obtain eternal life. He wanted eternal life and had an interest in the commandments as well. Outwardly he looks like an earnest and excellent seeker. However, in his question there was an important error. He did not think of eternal life as the grace that God gives, but thought that he could obtain it as the reward for the good work that he had done. He believed that if he made an effort he could reach the life of God.

The situation of the world is truly precarious. It would be well if things went well, but there are matters in which everything that has been built up collapses if things go wrong even once. Let us leave such matters to the nation, and our work is to preach the gospel of the water and the Spirit in our own place, to send out many books, and to do our work well.
