Matthew Chapters 14 through 18 proclaim that Jesus Christ is the Savior who gives the bread of life, and that He is God the Creator who rules over the wind and the waves, over sickness and over demons. This Word also teaches the disciples whom they must believe Jesus to be, how the church is built upon that faith, and with what heart a saved person must serve the gospel and his brothers.

Matthew chapter 14 begins with the death of John the Baptist. Herod the tetrarch heard the report about Jesus and was afraid, thinking that John the Baptist, whom he had beheaded, had come back to life. John had been imprisoned for rebuking Herod, saying that it was not right for him to have taken Herodias, his younger brother’s wife; and through the dance of Herodias’s daughter and Herod’s rash oath, he lost his life. When Herod was rebuked for his sin, there was a pricking in his heart, but instead of forsaking his sin, he chose the path of removing the one who had proclaimed the truth. Having guilt and the faith that receives the remission of sin are entirely different things.

Jesus heard the news that John the Baptist had died. John the Baptist was martyred, beheaded in prison. So John’s disciples took his body and buried it. When our Lord heard this news, He departed by boat to a deserted place by Himself. Hearing of the death of John the Baptist, our Lord knew that His own time was drawing near.
